A CARTOGRAPHY OF HUMAN EXPERIENCE

(ARTICLE UNDER REVIEW)
Architecture inherently intersects with science, philosophy, and art while drawing on their methods, tools, and perspectives to shape spatial understanding. Among the shared concerns of these domains is human experience, a complex and multifaceted concept explored through diverse terminologies and frameworks. This article presents a systematic and holistic literature analysis, along with a conceptual model, aimed at mapping the breadth of terms used to investigate human experience in both physical and virtual realms. Drawing on a hundred terms across multiple disciplines, we construct a model that explores the ontology and epistemology of human-environment-nature relations while investigating the notion of reality through conceptual cartography, highlighting interrelations, overlaps, and distinctions among fields. Our aim is not only to trace how human experience is studied but also to provide a holistic view that bridges disciplinary silos. By doing so, we reveal how the understanding of experience is evolving, from “being-in-the-world,” to the notion of “becoming-with,” reflecting a more relational and dynamic understanding that includes humans, environment, and nature. We propose the term “experience realm” to encompass the interrelationships between human experience and environment. This article employs a cartographic approach that provides an integrative perspective to inform future multidisciplinary research.
